2012 – A New Hope

As I finish counting down to the new year and celebrate with my family eating food and drinking wine in the middle of the night, I realize, it’s another year.

Another year to continue existing, another year to witness the good and the evil of mankind, another year to try to become a better person.

Back in 2006, an asshole hillbilly was put into office by the United States. Since then, this stupid hick has singlehandedly crashed the US economy and in effect, the world’s economy (except China), by waging a war for oil which he didn’t get for the country, and also by allowing banks to recklessly spend tax payer money, then bailed their asses out after they went under.

After this dumbass redneck retard left office, he was replaced by a black superman who promised hope for the future. However, this black thunder of a president did nothing and the economy continues to crash through 2009 to 2011. People continue to lose their homes, their jobs, and their lives. So do you really think 2012 will be any better? Eat my shorts.

Sunflower Hotel Review

When you’re a tourist and you go to Davao City, you’ll want to stay at a hotel where you can maximize your budget. There are a lot of quality hotels in Davao City and Sunflower Hotel is one of those hotels.

The rates are not exactly cheap, but they’re not that expensive either. Here they are:

Rates:

Standard Single – Php 1,300.00
Standard Double – Php 1,650.00
Deluxe Single – Php 1,500.00
Deluxe Double – Php 1,900.00
Super Deluxe Single – Php 1,800.00
Family Room – Php 3,800.00
Executive Suite – Php 2,300.00

I booked a Deluxe Single room prior to my arrival in Davao. When I got to the hotel at 6:00AM, I was told that check-in time was at 12:00pm. I really needed to go to sleep because I hadn't slept at all the night before. Before I could ask anything, they offered to place me in a Standard Single room until there was a vacancy in a Deluxe Single room. Not bad customer service there.

So I was placed in the cheapest room in the house, which was really cramped and dark. It had a split type air condition, a bathroom, a television, and of course, a bed - but no windows. All I cared about at that time was sleep so I didn't have the chance to take pictures of that room, or even use the bathroom or television. I just turned on the air condition and drifted off to neverland.

At about 11:00AM, the hotel phone rang. They told me my room was ready. By this time, I had had enough sleep. I moved to my Deluxe Single room and it was everything I hoped it would be. Spacious, a window, a big bed, clean bathroom and all. By the time I was settled in, it was lunch time.

I went out to lunch and I came back about 2 hours later. When I got back, it was the first time I noticed how nice their lobby was. When you open the door, the first thing you see is the front desk. Hanging high above it is a nice, round chandelier. Off to the side was a nice comfy sofa where you can sit down, have a cup of coffee and read a bunch of magazines. I took a few shots of course.

I went back to the room and turned on my laptop. I tried connecting to their wifi network so I could check my social networking sites. No wifi. I went over to the table where there was an ethernet connection which I plugged into my laptop. Nothing. I called the front desk and told them that I couldn't connect to their wifi or ethernet connection. They politely told me that the wifi connection couldn't reach the third floor so I had to use the ethernet. She said she'd send someone up to fix the connection. Not more than 5 minutes since the call, someone buzzed at the door and helped me out. There seemed to have been a loose connection between the wall socket and the ethernet cable. After a few minutes of tinkering, I had internet.

I checked all of the social networking sites I wanted to check, then I decided to do some YouTube HD streaming. No buffering at any point. Their internet is wicked fast. After a few hours on the PC, I took some shots of the room and bathroom so I could post them here. Later on, I decided to meet up with friends and enjoy a night out in Davao. By the time I got back to the hotel, I forget what time this was, I was sleepy and drifted off.

When morning came, I went down for breakfast. They have a small breakfast menu but it didn't matter. I eat my usual corned beef, sunny side up egg, and rice. The serving was okay, but I could have appreciated it more if there was more corned beef, but I won't complain. I got what I got from the free breakfast. Warning though, if you check in alone, this is all fine and dandy. But if you check in with someone, you'll have to pay for an extra breakfast which is about Php 100.00. Apparently, the free breakfast is applicable only for one occupant.

After this, I enjoyed the rest of my trip to Davao. I had the satisfaction of knowing that wherever I went, at the end of the day, I had a comfortable, quiet place to rest. All in all it's a great hotel. Nicely decorated rooms, comfortable bed, wicked fast internet connection (which is free by the way), clean rest rooms, accommodating people, quiet environment, and free breakfast (for one, that is).

Overall, Sunflower Hotel in Davao City gets my two thumbs up.

Old School Meets New School Photowalk

What started out as small talk between two Photography Club presidents here in Cebu is turning out to become one of the most anticipated photo walks of the year. IPC President Brian Gerona told me that they were getting inquiries from photographers from Manila wanting to join the event. Of course, everyone’s welcome. There are no fees, no registration, no discrimination. The goal here is to get all photo enthusiasts together and interpret through photos the sights and sounds of Downtown, Cebu. Whether you’re bringing the most expensive Digital SLR or the cheapest Film Point and Shoot, we encourage you to come and meet the people you may have something in common with, a passion for photography.

Trip to Visayan State University

On April 30, a bunch of the hardcore peeps from our photo club (IPC) took a trip to Visca, Baybay, Leyte. Although the weather wasn’t on our side for most of the days we were there, we did however got some interesting macro, landscape and sunset shots. For my macro, I have no idea what the names of any of the insects I took so I just made names up. For our landscapes, I’m not familiar with the names of any of the places we went to but I did however manage to get a few shots that I find a bit breathtaking. Here goes:

OtakuFest 2011

The OtakuFest is a an annual cosplay event held at the UP Cebu Grounds in Lahug, Cebu City. It’s a gathering of cosplayers who strut their costumes and strengthen their bond with other cosplayers. There are contests, bands, and a few skits. It’s a little bit like the Comic Con in Las Vegas except it’s a bit scaled down. A lot of photographers are drawn to these events because of the elaborate costumes and the fun people. Although I wasn’t able to be there from start to finish, I still spent a significant amount of my time. Anyway, here are my shots from the OtakuFest 2011. Hope you enjoy.

Playing With Light – a session with a master

This was a photo session organized by renowned photographer and artist, [Dexter Bongo] in behalf of IPC. This session was more of a lesson than a shoot. We learned how to manipulate light through Dexter’s eyes and capture compelling shots for our individual portfolios. The things we learned were priceless. Anyway, here are the shots:

Yet Another Photo Session (with hot models)

I apologize for my recent laziness. I haven’t been able to mind my blog lately. Anyway, since I haven’t been up to date with the tech world, I’ll share what I’ve been up to. Rod Evan Incorporado, a photographer and also a good friend of mine, organizes these photo sessions with his models. I’ll be sharing the latest shoot we did in Fort San Pedro, Cebu City. Hope you enjoy.

For this shoot, I decided to do something different. Instead of using my trusty Canon T1i (500D), I went with my Dad’s Nikon D90. I used only the 18-105 Kit lens that came with it because it’s the only Nikon lens we have. Nevertheless, I think I did quite a good job considering I’m not that familiar with the Nikon System.

The bottom line is, we all had fun at the shoot and I made a few new friends.

Down Town IPC Photo Walk

Trip To Gen San

Our Trip to General Santos City was a blast. I was able to meet great people, take great shots, and have the most relaxing time of my life.

We flew in from Cebu City to Davao on Cebu Pacific. Then From Davao, we took a road trip to General Santos with my uncle. We were housed at the [Sarangani Highlands].

We visited Glan, South Cotabato, and the Sarangani Province. All in all, it was a trip to remember.

As I’ve stated in my previous post, I’m concentrating more on my Photography now than Tech. Although I still continue to develop websites for clients and friends, I’m more into my camera than my computer during my free time. Anyway, I spotted an article in one of the forums I’m active in (Istorya.net) which I think is a great guide for any photographer who wants to go into weddings. So Much To Do, So Little Time

I haven’t been able to post here lately, mainly because I have involuntarily become a very busy bee. I haven’t been up to date on the tech world, which is usually what I’m on top of most of the time. I have been continuing my work on current clients which I think is going great except for a few minor issues. Finally, I’ve been focusing more on my photography, which I think is not world class…yet.

I apologize for not being able to update my site as regularly as I can. However, currently, I’ve been posting a lot of my shots on my Flickr page. Anyway, I’ve also noticed my 1/10 page rank on Google has now become 0/10. Sad for me. In the future, I hope I’ll be able to post everyday just as I used to.

A Letter To a Twitter Spammer

Either this person is bored out of his mind, which I think I am today, or just plain naive, retarded, and a major idiot. He writes a beautifully composed email to a Twitter spammer that will bring you to tears if you read it. If you’re a Twitterer, or Twit or Twittist or whatever the term is, you’ll understand that there are a lot of spammers out there with Twitter accounts. The fastest way to tell, is the number of followers they have vs. the number of people they follow. If an account follows a lot of people, like thousands, and only has like 10 followers, chances are, the owner of the account is a spammer. Anyway, read the letter. You’ll see. By the way, I’m still bored.

Well. I don’t have anything for anyone today. Tech news is boring. Gaming is boring. My whole life is boring. And I’m busy as hell. I realize the lot of you have to ride to work. So I’m leaving you with this post.

Always remember, when life takes its toll on you, you look up to the heavens and ask, “Why God? Why?” , and you don’t receive an answer. It only means one of two things:

There is no God.
He hates you.

Just keep your chin up and maintain a sense of humor. It really goes a long way. Have a great week everyone!

No Activity

I haven’t been up to much lately. I have nothing to post here because I’m just too damn bored and lazy.

Quick recap of events since I’ve been gone.

I went to Bantayan Island with a friend and got into a motorcycle accident. No broken bones. Just a few scratches and bruises, Thank the gods.

Also, last week, iPhone 4 was announced at WWDC 2010. I don’t care much about it, but most of you techie fans do. So I guess that makes it something worth mentioning.

I’ve been catching up on a Series I’ve missed. I don’t understand how. I’m making my way through the third season of Burn Notice. The story is about a CIA Operative who gets fired. He gets dumped in Miami with nothing but the clothes on his back. He doesn’t understand why he is given a Burn Notice and tries to find out with two friends, an ex-spy from the CIA, played by Bruce Campbell from Army of Darkness, and an ex-spy ex-girlfriend, played by Gabrielle Anwar.

Other than this, I just sit on my ass and wait for shit to happen.
