Ilshat Garipov, a Russian designer, comes up with an idea for a smart phone, and it is both elegant and functional. When I first saw the phone, I almost pissed my pants. Currently, I’m using a Nokia X2-01 because I fucked up my iPhone, and I got it for free with a 2 year contract with Sun Cellular. Ever since, I’ve been window shopping for an Android phone. From the Galaxy S-II to the Quad core LG Optimus, my mouth has watered for these modern smart phones. Unfortunately, my budget just won’t allow me to buy a phone that costs more than $300. So I just settled.

After seeing this pamphlet design from Mojorno, my heart rate went up a bit.

The Booklet unfolds like a pamphlet with each side representing a commonly used application or function. Manufacturers can cut it to any size and once it’s worn out, just recycle it. Don’t worry about private information because everything is served from a cloud. Power is supplied by, SURPRISE, the sun thanks to energy absorbing nanoparticles.

- Yanko Design

The booklet phone is solar powered as well. I remember the first time I’ve been to a fireworks show, that “WOW” feeling and chills that ran down my spine, it’s happening all over again. Now for the bad news. There are no plans for this design to hit the mainstream because nanoparticle technology is still on the drawing board. My kids will probably be the generation who will enjoy this technology. Lucky bastards.

I’m an avid fan of opensource framework. I’ve developed a lot of sites using only opensource framework. My favorite to this day is WordPress. It’s easy to set up, and it has a lot of support from the community. Hell, this site is run on WP. Now, it has come to a point that even BitTorrent has found its mark on word press. I was just browsing around and found out about WP-Trader, a plug-in that turns your WordPress installation into a Bit Torrent tracker. Wow.

Here’s what Andrew Walker, the developer of the plug in, had to say:

All of the torrent tracker source codes out there are unique or good in their own ways, but I saw a lack in one click install and setup for torrent sites since only a couple of sources offer that function. On a daily basis I saw people coming into the forums having problems with install and setup of their sites.

I do have a strong belief that if you do not know how to install or mod your own torrent site then you should not be running a torrent site but something like WP-Trader can benefit artists who have little to no knowledge about how to set up a site.

This guy, in my opinion, is a freakin’ genius.

500 horsepower? Check.
33.3 kilometers to a liter? Check.
Zero to 100 in 3.2 Seconds? Check.
Affordable? Awww shit!

Powered by a 3.4 Liter Hybrid Engine with a Mid-engine layout, and priced at $630,000, the Porsche 918 Concept is not your everyday drive…yet. It’s currently a concept which will become a production vehicle in 2012. It’s sooner than you think. Beautiful as hell, and more fuel economic than my 1994 Toyota Corolla, the Porsche 918 is a car that everyone (with lots of money) is looking forward to. Hell if I could afford it when it comes out, I’d drive it everywhere I go. With the bottle scraps I’m making now, I’d be damned if I could afford a Porsche in 2012, the most expensive Porsche at that. I hope they never release this car…ever!

It’s all about the storage these days. While Seagate releases a 3TB external drive, Netgear ships out their highly acclaimed ReadyNAS Ultra. You can put up to 12TB worth of hard disk space in it, and that’s not what makes it special. Netgear has partnered up with Orb so you can stream movies and music directly from it. Also, they’ve partnered up with TiVo so it can also be used as a DVR extender. The Netgear ReadyNAS Ultra is housed in a sleek black casing that looks practically like a PC Case. Price is set at $899 with 2TB disks. It will be available starting October. I’m sure if I get one, I won’t be hiding it in a closet. It would be a crime to do so.

Andrew Chirkova, some designer, creates a magnificent design for a Rolls Royce Race car. It’s absolutely dreamy and I want one so bad. The only problem is like most of my design posts, they’re only available on the drawing board. There are no technical specifications available except that it’s going to have a mid-engine layout. The only thing available are absolutely mouth watering pictures. Check them out.

For those people who shelled out their hard earned cash for 3D HDTVs, here’s some good news. You can now shell out more of your hard earned cash to subscribe to DIRECTV 3D HD channels. The channels are free for existing DIRECTV subscribers, but it’s another $10.00 a month for a new subscription. Personally, I just can’t get off on the idea that I have to wear glasses to watch TV. It’s just ridiculous to me. Until they can bring the technology of the Nintendo 3DS to HDTV sized screens, I’ll pass on this one. But for you future forefront feeling people out there, I guess this is good news for you.

For existing and new subscribers to DIRECTV, if you’re interested in the 3D HD service, you can sign up [here].

Ever since I got my DSL connection, I’ve been all over the net looking for ways to entertain myself. Back in 2004, I downloaded a lot of porn, then I discovered BitTorrent which I still use to this day. And a while back, since I got a White Macbook, I’ve been subscribing to free podcasts everywhere. Be it tech, comedy, politics, or just plain nonsense, I’ve been subscribing to a lot of Revision3, TWiT, and other podcasting groups. I’m now up to the point that I believe that video podcasting is the future of Television. Now, since none of the tech news I’ve been reading around interests me, I decided to share the free podcasts I’ve been subscribing to through all these years. Here we go.

1. Digg Reel

The Digg Reel is one of Revision3′s most popular podcasts. It used to feature the best of Digg’s comedy category on a weekly basis. They recently changed to a daily format. It’s still as interesting as ever. The Digg Reel is hosted by Andrew Bancroft, one of Revision3′s finest hosts.

2. The Engadget Show

Engadget is one of the most, if not THE website to visit to know about the latest gadgets and techno trends. As an added bonus, the nice people at Engadget host a weekly podcast recapping the most important events and releases of the week. The show is hosted by Engadget’s Darren Murph and because they have become a high profile company, they usually have interesting guests from the tech world.

3. The Tech Guy

The Tech Guy is a show hosted by Leo Laporte, one of former TechTV’s finest. Leo is now a very respectable icon in the tech world and since joining the TWiT network, has boosted his reputation even more. Like Engadget’s Podcast, Leo recaps the best tech news of the week, and he even helps novice techies with some tips.

4. Attack of the Show Daily Podcast

Attack of the Show is one of the most popular shows on G4TV, formerly TechTV. Usually they do a lot of nonsense on that show, and my dad hates it. However, I understand entertainment value. Also their daily podcast recaps most of the important events they cover on the show without all of the nonsense which is why I love it.

5. Geekbrief.TV

This show is hosted by Cali Lewis. I haven’t dug into her history. All I know is that she talks well, has a nice rack, and talks about important stuff. She’s also a pure techie unlike those other women who host tech shows who just read lines off of a teleprompter. Cali Lewis is a genuine geek, which is why I am a loyal viewer of the show.

UPDATE: I just learned, and I don’t know why I’m so outdated, that Cali Lewis has left Mevio, the company that owns Geekbrief. She is now with Revision3 and hosts a show called Geekbeat. AWESOME! Check her out on [Geekbeat.TV].

6. The Game Show

Hosted by three people who are out of their minds and usually drunk, the game show delivers the best of gaming news, previews, updates and other shit. They use profanity a lot, and have Alison Haislip from G4TV on the show a lot. Personally, I think one of the hosts, Jim Festante, has the hots for her. Nevertheless, even though I don’t play games that much anymore, I still keep myself updated via The Game Show.

7. Penn Point

Penn Jillette is one of the people I look up to. He’s a proud atheist, and a political tree shaker. He’s one of Vegas’ finest magicians and co-hosts a show called Bullshit on ShowTime. In his spare time, he also hosts this little podcast to rant and rave about things that aren’t covered on Bullshit. I think watching his podcast is a fine way for me to keep myself updated on current events.

8. TorrentFreak.TV

TorrentFreak is one of the websites I religiously visit to know about the current events in the underground world. Their main coverage is mostly about the BitTorrent technology and piracy. The podcast usually gets updated about once every two blue moons, but it’s hosted by a teleprompter reading Stacia. She’s not that good a host, but the news is interesting enough to subscribe to.

9. The Adam Carolla Show

I don’t know much about Adam Carolla but he mostly appears on live TV during celebrity roasts. Thus, he knows a lot of celebrities, and usually have them over at his podcast. He also rants and raves about current events in his life, which most people don’t give a damn about. I think it’s just adorable.

10. Best of YouTube

I accidentally found this on the iTunes Store when I searched for YouTube thinking I was on a browser. Usually, they showcase a lot of trippy videos which I think could be experienced better when on weed. From time to time, they also show heartwarming stuff they find on YouTube which I think makes this show worth subscribing to.

Anyway, I’m limiting this list to 10 because frankly, I’m tired of typing. There are a lot of other free podcasts available on the iTunes store which will cater to the type of person you are. Just open up iTunes and go the store and check out the podcast category and see what floats your boat. If you’re a techie like me, I suggest you search for the podcasts I mentioned above. Have a good one, whoever you are, and wherever in the world you may be.

HP Data Centers are to be powered by Bullshit. Yes. That’s right. In a move to becoming a green company, HP Labs has announced designs for their Data Centers to be powered by cow dung. It’s everywhere. It’s a sustainable energy source. It’s good for the planet. So why not. They said so in a press release.

In this process, the heat generated by the data center can be used to increase the efficiency of the anaerobic digestion of animal waste. This results in the production of methane, which can be used to generate power for the data center. This symbiotic relationship allows the waste problems faced by dairy farms and the energy demands of the modern data center to be addressed in a sustainable manner.

Well, if it smells like shit, and it’s powered by shit, you can bet it’s definitely…HP.

I don’t know if this is going to be permanent or not. I sure hope not. If anyone can get information on how to support the piratebay, please say so on the comments.

Oh, and a while back, I made a post about what downornot.com can be used for. I guess I just ate my own words. Heh.

UPDATE: ThePirateBay.org is now up and running again. They probably just moved to a different/new host. You gotta love their persistence. The MPAA can suck it.

I’ve been walking around SM Mall of Asia today and saw something nifty that may be of some good use. They call it the Extreme Power Saver. This is how it basically works. Just plug it in to any AC Outlet in your house and when your monthly electric bill is due, you save 30% off. There seems to be much debate about power saving devices. A lot of discussions are going on here.

Now down to the basic question, is it a scam or not? I have no idea. Some people say it is, some people say it isn’t. However, Ace Hardware in SM seems to stake their name on the latter, since they’re selling the Extreme Power Saver at Php 2,000. I got mine at Php 1,500 because it was on sale. I still have to observe if it really does what its supposed to. I’ll let you all know what’s what soon.

Here’s a weird site I found while browsing around. It’s called downornot.com. It’s a site you can use to check if other sites are down or not. You can use it to check if your favorite site is down without having to visit it. For example, if you want to check if Facebook is down or not, all you’ll need to do is type in ‘facebook.com’ in the blank, and it tells you the status.

I think it’s funny that a person has to actually go to another website to check if the site that they want to go to is actually running. I don’t know. There may be some other uses for this but as for me, I think the best way to check if a website is down or not is to visit it. Nevertheless, if you can make some sense of this site, please let me know.

Today, as I was browsing around my Google Reader Page, I’ve found 3 Gadgets that were posted that don’t make any sense to me. Here they are:

First up is a bag made out of a recycled keyboard. It’s just ridiculous for any sane woman to bring this thing around anywhere. If I saw someone sporting this abomination, I’d move away and keep a safe distance from her. She clearly has some psychological issues.

Next up is the Joojoo Tablet by Fusion Garage. This was initially to be called the CrunchPad but the people at TechCrunch pulled out because of some financial issues during the manufacturing stage, or something like that. Anyway, this Indian guy decided to push through with the project and call it the Joojoo. Apparently, after Wired got hold of a unit and reviewed it, they say “The Joojoo is made of DooDoo.” It’s slow, it’s buggy, and it’s not even cheap. For $500, I’d rather go with the iPad. And if you read my previous posts, you know that I despise the iPad.

Last and the very, very least is the CHOBi CAM. It’s a 4.4×2.9×1.2cm digital camera. It supports microSDHC cards up to 8GB, can shoot pictures at 2048 x 1536 resolution, and it does video at 1280 x 960 at 30fps. It’s a small motherfucker. As a matter of fact, it’s too small to amount to anything good. I just don’t see the point.

To most people, electric cars are the future. They save you money. They don’t pollute the environment. They aren’t noisy. They look cool. However, there are things in the technology that electric cars use that CAN go wrong. I’m not saying that they WILL inevitably go wrong. These are just the things that they see might go wrong. Here’s the list:

Cruise Control

Anti-lock Brakes

Engine Control Module

Door locks

Power Steering

Electronic Throttle Control

Vehicle data bus

These things actually can go wrong with petrol powered cars. So I don’t see this as a big deal which they can’t fix or improve on when they start mass producing.
