David and Eva Venables, a couple I got to know because I did an e-session for their niece, Heidi, asked me to revamp the website for their manor in Babag, Cebu City. When I first went there, I was awed by the place. I didn’t know something like this existed in our City. David, a British ex-pat who specializes in Real Estate Development, created the Manor based on English traditional houses. Using his experience in the real estate market, Terracotta bricks, and a lot of love, he managed to create the perfect getaway. Only 30 minutes away from all the hustle of city life, I tell you, Terracotta Manor is definitely the place to get away from it all.

3rd Cebu Dog Agility National Competition

For all you dog lovers out there, there’s going to be an Agility Competition at IT Park, Cebu on May 12 and 13. No admission fee. However, if you want your pet to compete, there will be a minimal fee I guess.

Also for amateur and professional photographers out there, there will be a Photo Contest. There will be a registration fee and you’ll get the chance to win:

Recommended Wedding Photographers in Cebu

As a member of the ISTORYA.NET Photography Club (IPC) and an assistant for Tisha Gerona (CebuWedding.net), I have had the privilege of working side by side with some of Cebu’s finest wedding photographers. I have compiled a list of the photographers I’ve worked with and a few comments on working for/with them.

Bells and Ribbons

Bells and Ribbons is run by a husband and wife team, Nelson and Veda. Nelson is a member of IPC and opened the door for me one day when he asked me to be his second shooter. It was a short notice call and I shot what I could. It was one of the first weddings I’ve ever shot. I was a bit panicky and my exposures weren’t that great. I admit I could have done better, but I thank both of them for the opportunity.

Kems Photography

Kems Photography is run by Karlo E. Matuginas (a.k.a karlomatuginas on ISTORYA.NET). Karlo was the former president of IPC and relinquished his position because of the sheer amount of clients he accommodates. I haven’t had the pleasure of working with him yet, but his work speaks for itself. Karlo is very meticulous when it comes to composition and post-processing.

Karlo is a full production photographer. He has a pool of regular assistants and second shooters. He does video, albums, and prints as well. Although some people may think his prices are pretty steep, I assure you, you get what you pay for. Karlo also does beautiful fashion shoots and portraits, as well.

We’ve had the pleasure of working with Christopher “Don2x” Colinares for 2 weddings already. And as always, he delivers consistently. Very professional, and very courteous, from the couple and from the coordination side, Don and his people are just perfect.

Shutterfairy Photography

Shutterfairy is a portrait and wedding photographer, based in Cebu City, Philippines. She is known to be one of the very few artistic female wedding photographers specializing in weddings, children, and family photography.

We’ve only had the pleasure of working with Shutterfairy once. But you know what they say, “First impressions last.” As an assistant wedding coordinator, she is a dream to work with. She always has a smile on her face, and she does her job really well. As a photographer, I envy her. I envy her attention to detail, and her artistic point of view. If you are a fan of the artistic approach to photography, Shutterfairy is definitely worth checking out.

PointandShoot.Asia

Of course, I couldn’t finish this article without giving props to my mentor and one of the most principled people I know, Dan Brian Gerona (dbgg1979). He started PointandShoot.Asia as an outlet for his travel photography. This is where he put his landscapes, portraits, and some of the shots he took as a second shooter for Lito Inso(CrashBurn). Later he moved his content over to his website, http://dbgg1979.com, and PointAndShoot.Asia strictly became a showcase for Weddings and Events.

PointAndShoot.Asia’s photography is inspired by Lito’s rich and vibrant colors. Of course, as time passed, we have started to develop our own style based on the taste of our clients. At PointAndShoot.Asia, we’re not just photographers; we’re also tech savvy gurus. Brian and I are both Web Developers and avid gamers. My Experience in Photography and IPC

I got an article published in istorya.net. It’s about my experience as a photographer and the adventure that goes along with it. I’d like to thank everyone involved and most especially to Ara Inso who has been very strong and very inspirational in dealing with crisis.

I apologize to my loyal readers for not being able to update my blog as often as you expected. I’ve been busy lately with a lot of projects and as soon as I get the time, I’ll post everything I’ve been up to. Stay tuned.

Lachi’s Sans Rival ATBP

In Davao City, one of the places I always eat at when I visit is Lachi’s. It’s their Unforgettable Grilled Pork Ribs that got me hooked at first. A friend brought me there and I remember thinking, “What’s so special about this place?” It was cramped, dark, and unappealing. My friend ordered the Pork Ribs for me and I hogged it down like a pig. Every time I eat there, it’s a dish I’ll always have on my plate. I also love their Laing. They say the best Laing is in Bicol. Well fuck that. It’s in Davao, bitches. For you foreigners out there, Laing is a dish Bicol natives introduced. Its main ingredient is Taro leaves. I’m not sure what else they put in there.

Anyway, back to Lachi’s. They used to be known for their Sans Rival and other desserts. Now, they’re a full blown restaurant. I’m not sure about their history, but Lachi is the name of the owner. She loves to cook and has made an enterprise of it. Back when I was introduced to the place, I mentioned it used to be dark and cramped. Apparently, they’ve had a lot of success and they’ve expanded and renovated the place a bit. It’s bright and welcoming now.

During lunch and dinner time, the place is always packed. A lot of people go there. It’s best if you call ahead. They’ll hold a reservation for you for 15 minutes. If you don’t make it on time, you’re fucked.

Here’s my experience this time around.

I called ahead. I got there. I noticed the new look. I took a picture. I sat down. I ordered the Ribs and Laing as usual. I added the Elsie’s Melt-in-your-mouth Roast Pork. The meat was tender and everything was good in the world. Then came the desserts. I don’t know what I was eating because I just pointed. You see, they keep all the desserts in a refrigerated area on the wall of the left side of the restaurant. You pick out what looks good to you and they’ll serve it to your table. So ate 2 desserts. Two words: Heavy and Heavenly.

Two thumbs up for Lachi’s. If you go to Davao, you should definitely check this place out. If you read this, go to Davao, and you don’t make the least bit effort to check them out, I hope you die alone and cold — in the dark.

Tiny Kitchen Creations in Davao City

I went Davao City last weekend again for a potential client visit. Before I left, I didn’t have anything to eat. By the time I landed, I was so hungry I could have eaten an entire horse. I took a cab to my hotel, unpacked some of my stuff and looked for a place to eat. Somewhere along F. Torres St., was this small building with a sign that said Tiny Kitchen.

At first glance, you would think it was some kind of furniture shop. But since I was familiar with the area, I know that it was some sort of a food place. F. Torres St. is unofficially the food capital of Davao City. So I went in and the first thing you see are their desserts and pastries. I didn’t care for pastries or desserts. I just wanted to wolf down a steak or something.

So I looked at their creatively made Chalkboard menu and I wanted to order the Lamb Caldereta. It’s been a while since I ate Spanish and Goat Caldereta is one of my favorites. But to my dismay, it wasn’t available. The waitress recommended the Mechado con Patatas. So I had that. For my second dish, I ordered the Chorizo y Tomate Pasta. For my drink, I went with the pretty standard Iced Tea.

After about 10 minutes, the food arrived. The Mechado con Patatas was a meal to die for. My mouth is watering right now thinking about it. The meat was so tender it practically melted in my mouth. Taste is puro Español. Sweet and delicious. The pasta was also sweet but with a touch of Italian. It was like an Italian Chef made the dish, and a Spanish cook sabotaged it. It was heavenly. Their Iced Tea is made of actual tea leaves, not something I hold in high esteem. I’m ashamed to say my mouth has been accustomed to the cheap sugar water they serve at McDonalds. I’m not really a tea fan, but if you are, you’ll love their Iced Tea.

I didn’t have dessert anymore because I ate meal good for two people and I just wanted to lie down on the floor and close my eyes. All in all, my first Tiny Kitchen experience was a good one and I definitely will recommend this place to my friends and family.

ZeroThreeTwo

Here’s an interesting website I’ve come across. ZeroThreeTwo is a website created by young local entrepreneurs who want to showcase the best Cebu and what its provinces have to offer. If you don’t get the gist of it, ZeroThreeTwo (032) is Cebu’s area code when you dial it from a Philippine telephone line.

The website features bars, restaurants, tourist attractions, and other fun you can have in our lovely city. As a Cebu City local, I basically know where to go for food and fun. However, zerothreetwo.com has featured a lot of places I haven’t been to and a lot of activities I haven’t experienced yet.

They also feature hotels and affordable places for tourists to reside and activities they may want to enjoy if they visit Cebu.

Bottom line is, whether you’re a local or not, if you want to know more what Cebu City currently has to offer, ZeroThreeTwo is the place to go.

PointandShoot.Asia

PointandShoot.Asia is a photography group created by Dan Brian Gerona to accomodate his clients for Wedding and Events Photography. Brian used to be the back up of Lito Inso, one of the most prominent and well respected wedding photographers in the country. PointandShoot.Asia style is geared towards natural colors and light. Their composition is inspired by Landscape Photography, since Brian is also a travel photographer. I am also a part of this group. I also shoot for PointandShoot.Asia as a second photographer during weddings, yet sometimes, I am also sent on solo assignments for events. Sometimes, I also function as an all around assistant. The website was initially created using an old version of WordPress. I just updated that version and the design.

Smart Phone Pamphlet Design

Ilshat Garipov, a Russian designer, comes up with an idea for a smart phone, and it is both elegant and functional. When I first saw the phone, I almost pissed my pants. Currently, I’m using a Nokia X2-01 because I fucked up my iPhone, and I got it for free with a 2 year contract with Sun Cellular. Ever since, I’ve been window shopping for an Android phone. From the Galaxy S-II to the Quad core LG Optimus, my mouth has watered for these modern smart phones. Unfortunately, my budget just won’t allow me to buy a phone that costs more than $300. So I just settled.

After seeing this pamphlet design from Mojorno, my heart rate went up a bit.

The Booklet unfolds like a pamphlet with each side representing a commonly used application or function. Manufacturers can cut it to any size and once it’s worn out, just recycle it. Don’t worry about private information because everything is served from a cloud. Power is supplied by, SURPRISE, the sun thanks to energy absorbing nanoparticles.

The booklet phone is solar powered as well. I remember the first time I’ve been to a fireworks show, that “WOW” feeling and chills that ran down my spine, it’s happening all over again. Now for the bad news. There are no plans for this design to hit the mainstream because nanoparticle technology is still on the drawing board. My kids will probably be the generation who will enjoy this technology. Lucky bastards.

Turn WordPress Into a Torrent Tracker

I’m an avid fan of opensource framework. I’ve developed a lot of sites using only opensource framework. My favorite to this day is WordPress. It’s easy to set up, and it has a lot of support from the community. Hell, this site is run on WP. Now, it has come to a point that even BitTorrent has found its mark on word press. I was just browsing around and found out about WP-Trader, a plug-in that turns your WordPress installation into a Bit Torrent tracker. Wow.

Here’s what Andrew Walker, the developer of the plug in, had to say:

All of the torrent tracker source codes out there are unique or good in their own ways, but I saw a lack in one click install and setup for torrent sites since only a couple of sources offer that function. On a daily basis I saw people coming into the forums having problems with install and setup of their sites.

I do have a strong belief that if you do not know how to install or mod your own torrent site then you should not be running a torrent site but something like WP-Trader can benefit artists who have little to no knowledge about how to set up a site.

This guy, in my opinion, is a freakin’ genius.

2012 – A New Hope

As I finish counting down to the new year and celebrate with my family eating food and drinking wine in the middle of the night, I realize, it’s another year.

Another year to continue existing, another year to witness the good and the evil of mankind, another year to try to become a better person.

Back in 2006, an asshole hillbilly was put into office by the United States. Since then, this stupid hick has singlehandedly crashed the US economy and in effect, the world’s economy (except China), by waging a war for oil which he didn’t get for the country, and also by allowing banks to recklessly spend tax payer money, then bailed their asses out after they went under.

After this dumbass redneck retard left office, he was replaced by a black superman who promised hope for the future. However, this black thunder of a president did nothing and the economy continues to crash through 2009 to 2011. People continue to lose their homes, their jobs, and their lives. So do you really think 2012 will be any better? Eat my shorts.

IPC Photo Gallery/Exhibit at IT Park

Gerald Yuvallos, Owner and General Manager of istorya.net, the biggest local online community in our city has acquired lobby space at the i2 Building in IT Park, Cebu City. The istorya managers decide to host a photo gallery featuring IPC’s best.

Pictures selected for the exhibit by Dan Brian Gerona, current IPC President, were printed out by Jan Gonzales with funding from Radical Ads. The dimensions of the shots are 19×28 inches, each mounted on a 20×30″ versa board.
